Ancient Merv
Merv is the oldest known city in Central Asia, founded on the banks of the Murgab River about 4,000 years ago. The city was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, serving as the capital of various states.
In the 12th century, its population reached half a million people, making it the largest city in the world at that time! When and why it was abandoned remains unknown, but today Merv stands as a vast expanse of ancient fortress ruins and remarkable medieval monuments.
