
Turkmen State Museum of Local History
By order of the Trans-Caspian Military-People's Administration, from 1894 onwards, a systematic collection of clothing, dwellings, tools, flora, fauna, and mineral resources of the region began.
After the collection returned from an exhibition held in Nizhny Novgorod, it was decided to use it as the basis for establishing a museum.
Historical Evolution
- 1894-1925: Called the Zoological Museum
- 1925: Renamed the State Museum, and the museum located in Ashgabat began to be called the 'State Museum of Local History of Turkmenistan'
- 1927: The Department of Fine Arts was opened within the State Museum of Local History
- 1951: When the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan was established, the State Museum of Local History became part of the Academy
- 1963: The State Museum of Local History was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture of Turkmenistan
- 1985: Through the merger of the 'Museum of History,' the 'State Museum of Local History of Turkmenistan,' and the memorial museum named after the 'Revolutionary Fighters,' the United State Museum of History and Ethnography of Turkmenistan was established
The museum's collections include exhibits characterizing the clothing, dwellings, work tools, flora, fauna, and mineral wealth of the local region, forming the foundation for Turkmenistan's modern museum system.
